The fall/winter season of 2011/2012 is a season full of contradictions that are perfect for the 20-something woman. Big, baggy full-length dresses have given way to sexy, classy fashion items. The waist is high fashion this season as are pencil skirts designed to display legs at their very best. On the other hand, heavy jackets and lots of tweed show the influence of the more masculine look dominating the men’s catwalks for this season. Colors are young and bright, ranging from sky blue and military green to the hues of bright gemstones. Softer shades include camel, especially in coats, and the very traditional black and white. Structured waists, enhanced by wide sleeves are for the young and slim. Tops are figure hugging while skirts are full, augmented by box pleats or kick pleats. Lace dresses, fur collars and powdery colors add to the effeminacy of the look. The feminine look is featured in1960’s A-line dresses that flair out to an above-the-knees length. Denim is an all-time favorite and even though few designers presented denim in their fall and winter collections, denim will be seen on the streets this fall. A smart jacket, preferably in tweed, dark denim jeans and furry boots will the look for office wear. Select a double-breasted tweed jacket with ostentatious fastenings. Fur is in vogue as far as boots are concerned. Ugg boots give rise to a range of boots boasting fur, both as a lining and as an adornment on the boot. Alternative footwear is the ballerina shoe, with fur or large buckles as trimmings. Both men and women will look good in tweeds this winter. Structured tweed suits have a double-breasted jacket accompanied by a narrow knee-length skirt. Look for bold buttons on the jacket. Leather gloves, especially those without fingers, look really chic with a tweed ensemble. Another fashion item borrowed from the men’s collection is the oversized bomber jacket in a khaki fabric or in black leather. Fur linings, ribbed waists and collars and lots of pockets complete the look. Trousers are leather, belted tightly at the waistline and either tapered to the legs or flare out in bell-bottoms. Zips are prominently displayed on trousers. The fabrics, colors and trimmings that a designer chooses adds his signature to a particular collection. Designers found multiple ways to trim and edge items with fur of all shapes, sizes and color, add outsized buttons, ostentatious zippers and use corded edging on their garments this season. Winter will shimmer with color of gemstones that have been attached to garments and belts will bring style and color to the cinched waists. Designers have not forgotten the chilly weather looming up ahead and pure woolen sweaters, thick Scandinavian knits and vivid color to outfits. Long coats in sombre colors are worn in juxtaposition to the denim tops, short skirts and dazzling colors. A good handbag will finish off your ensemble.
